Overview
United Family Healthcare (UFH) is China’s longest-established private international hospital network. It began in 1997 as Beijing United Family Hospital — profiled by the China Research Center in an interview with co-founder Roberta Lipson — and has grown into a network of hospitals and clinics across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Hangzhou and Hong Kong. Hospital for Special Surgery in New York describes it as China’s first and only multi-city JCI-accredited private hospital network, with which HSS runs a clinical partnership; the network’s investor history is documented by Warburg Pincus.
The network was built explicitly around foreign and expatriate patients: Beijing United Family Hospital was established to serve the foreign community with comprehensive bilingual Chinese-English services, with international staff across its physician roster. English-first operation is the default rather than an add-on department, which is the practical difference between UFH and a public hospital’s international division.
Why profile it here? Because of a gap in our video library. Almost every video we catalogue covers the public system; the exception, an MRI paid out of pocket at an international private hospital in Kunming, does not name the facility. UFH is the best-documented example of that same private/international tier — the one foreign residents in major Chinese cities actually use when they want English-language, appointment-based, insurer-billable care — and its pricing tier is the right reference point when a video shows private-tier numbers next to public-tier ones.
